My Story
Mom, Designer, Entrepreneur
Hi! I'm Kerri Quigley, founder of The Fashion Class in NYC. My passion for sewing began when I was just six, thanks to my grandmother who first introduced me to the craft. I went on to attend Parsons School of Design, and in 2010, I founded The Fashion Class, a space where kids and teens can explore their creativity through sewing and design. I'm also the author of Fashion Design for Kids and a proud mom of two. I believe strongly in maintaining a work-life balance, so I can be there for my children while running a successful business that inspires the next generation of designers.
Our Mission
The Fashion Class opens the door to the world of fashion with entertaining, hands-on learning for children and teens ages 2-17 and adults of all ages!
We make sewing and fashion design easy and fun for everyone! Our courses combine practical skills with creativity, unlocking limitless self-expression in students of all ages.
We are not your grandma’s sewing class! Unlike sewing-only courses, The Fashion Class provides a big-picture introduction to fashion alongside lessons on how to make real clothing. Students learn sewing skills along with illustration, merchandising, fashion history, the business of fashion, entrepreneurship, and more.
Our History
Kerri starts her very first sewing class in the vibrant and bustling neighborhood of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York. As she embraces this new chapter in her life, she envisions a future where her passion for sewing blossoms into a rewarding and fulfilling career.
Kerri Quigley’s passion for teaching fashion design quickly outgrew her original space in Brooklyn. Seeing the demand for her classes and wanting to expand her vision, she took a leap of faith and opened a larger studio near Bryant Park in Manhattan. This bold move allowed her to reach more students and solidify The Fashion Class as a creative hub in the heart of the fashion world, offering young designers the opportunity to learn and grow in a space that truly reflects the excitement and energy of the industry
As The Fashion Class continued to flourish, Kerri expanded its reach beyond Manhattan, opening additional locations on the Upper East Side and in Merrick, Long Island. These new studios allowed even more children and teens to experience the joy of sewing and fashion design. Each new location became a vibrant community where creativity thrived, reflecting Kerri’s mission to make fashion education accessible to aspiring young designers across New York City and beyond.
One unforgettable day, Kerri’s absolute favorite designer, Betsey Johnson, stopped by The Fashion Class, bringing her trademark energy and excitement. Since Kerri had admired Betsey’s bold and playful designs since she was a tween, it was a full-circle moment. While The Fashion Class welcomes students from all walks of life, its creative environment has also attracted the children of top designers and A-list celebrities, including Michelle Williams and Matthew McConaughey, making it a truly unique space where fashion dreams come to life.
When the pandemic hit and New York City shut down, Kerri made the difficult decision to close all of The Fashion Class locations except for the Upper East Side studio. Despite the challenges, Kerri remained committed to her students, adapting her business online to keep creativity alive during uncertain times. While expecting her first child, Kerri sewed face masks and rallied the community to join her efforts, keeping people connected and inspired as the city navigated the crisis.
Kerri’s book, Fashion Design for Kids, was published to rave reviews, quickly becoming a favorite among young aspiring designers and parents alike. The book’s approachable, fun, and creative projects made it a hit, allowing kids to explore their passion for fashion from home.
In 2024, Kerri expanded The Fashion Class by opening a second studio on the Upper West Side, bringing her unique approach to fashion education to even more students in New York City. This new location allowed young designers from the area to explore their creativity and develop their sewing skills in a supportive and inspiring environment. The Upper West Side studio reflects Kerri’s ongoing commitment to making fashion accessible to children and teens across the city, while continuing to grow The Fashion Class community.
